A time for everything
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2a)
My sister was a kind, loving, and knowledgeable woman. She was also God’s servant and dedicated to serving the parents and children of our county. In her capacity as a school board member, she constantly engaged with students, teachers, school administrators, and parents. Her car likely muttered each morning, “How many schools, athletic events, and community functions are we visiting today?”

My sister left us to be with Jesus last week. She’s likely reading to the smallest angels in heaven.
What’s our purpose?
My dear sister had a purpose in life–actually several–love family, be the best person you can possibly be, and serve the Lord by serving His people.
Throughout the years, I’ve questioned my purpose in life. I work hard in every aspect, but often question, “Is my labor meaningful?”
Parenting is a major task, we’re fortunate when God blesses us along that journey. He will guide us, if we ask. Teaching, I believe, is an honorable profession and we serve in answer to God’s calling to care for His children. I’m truly blessed in my life with family, my desire to be a lifelong learner, and my goal to share learning with others.
Family and teaching, two noble tasks in His service.
Any profession can be in answer to our Father’s calling to serve, don’t you think? If our purpose is to serve our Lord, He guides our steps.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for human masters. (Colossians 3:23)
Sharing the Fruit
My sister dove heart and soul into whatever task she engaged. Being a school board member was no exception. She shared fruit in a plethora of ways. She was a/an:
- Good listener
- Compassionate advocate
- Encourager
- Strong fighter for justice
- Staunch supporter of children and families
- Dedicated and determined servant
- Tireless worker
One of my previous posts focuses on my mother, my hero, her kindness and servant heart are traits I seek to emulate. This week has provided me the opportunity to reflect on my dear sister’s legacy. She loved deeply and her actions demonstrated her love.
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience. (Colossians 1:9-11)
There is a time for everything . . . In the time I have left on earth, I pray I can share fruit.
If you knew you were leaving your earthly home tomorrow, what fruit would you share today?
I’m so sorry for your loss. My sister went to Heaven on May 2, 2025. I’m praying for you and your family.
I’m sorry, Melissa. I know you understand the empty spot in my life now. But I am blessed to have had a full life with my sister. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. May God bless you.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Sister’s are special and God’s gift to each other. My late wife had two sisters and what a blessing they were to each other (and me). Prayers and love in Christ.
Yes, Jim, sisters are a blessing. When we marry, it’s a joy when we are gifted with another set of sisters. Thank you for sharing and for your prayers.
I am so sorry for your loss. You wrote a beautiful tribute here and one that leads each of us to think about the legacy we want to leave.
Marilyn, I’m so grateful for your compassionate and thoughtful response. It’s been much on my mind since her passing as to what is to be my legacy. Peace and blessings, my friend.
Your sister sounds like a wonderful person. May she rest in peace.
Yes, she was wonderful. Thank you, Priscilla.
What a lovely tribute to your sister, Katherine. I’m praying for you and all the family.
I’m grateful for your prayers, Diana. Thank you for sending me a blessing with your kind response.
I am so sorry for your loss, Katherine. I am grateful that our Comforter is with you through it.
Yes, Sylvia, I’m grateful for our Comforter. Life is about living, loving, and loss. He is with us during the joy and holds us in His arms of love during loss. I have been and still am blessed by my family. I learned so much from my sister and she gave her love to all of us. Thank you for your kindness.
My heartfelt condolences to you and your family, Ms. Katherine. While your sister, Ms. Nell is in Heaven’s glory, the hard work of grieving remains here on earth. I will be praying for you and your family in the coming days, weeks, and months, ma’am.
Thank you for your prayers, J.D. Your care and concern have been with me through loss, pain, and grief. Thinking of you and praying as you continue to travel the road of sorrow and grief. Our loving Savior is with us.
Katherine, I’m sorry for your loss. This is a wonder tribute to your sister.
Thank you, Lisa. My sister was a wonderful role model of love and service. I’m blessed to have been her “little” sister. May God bless you and give you strength in His service.
Katherine, I’m so very sorry to hear this. How blessed you are to have had such a wonderful sister. I’ve learned from losing my dad, that the loss of such a person does cause us to examine our own lives and question the impact we having on others. Jesus gives us our purpose and shows us how to live it out. Thank you for being a blessing and a light in this world.
Terri, I’m so grateful for your kind words of hope and encouragement. I agree, the reflection period following the loss of our loved ones provides time for a deep examination of our purpose. As you point out, Jesus gives us purpose and guides our path in our goal to serve Him. As always, He is there to carry us in our sorrow and lead us through the dark valley of grief. Thank you.
I’m so sorry for your loss Katherine. Your sister sounds like an amazing person. I pray all of us are remembered for our Godly traits. Praying for you and your family.
My sister was an amazing person and helped me immensely in my formative years and was a wonderful encourager as I began to write. She was a wonderful role model of service and I learned so much from her. Thank you for your prayers. Like you, I pray we are remembered for our Godly traits and service to Him. Peace and blessings.
I’m praying for you and everyone who loves your sister. I’m sorry for your loss.
Thank you, Joni. We are grateful for your prayers.
