Life is precious

I vividly remember the birth of my children–an experience of great pain and amazing joy. A few years ago, I witnessed the miracle of my granddaughter’s birth. Recalling these memories reminds me, once again, that life is precious.

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalm 139:13-14)

I recently read an inspiring and deeply moving book by Maureen Miller, Gideon’s Book. This compelling and tender story follows the lives of Gideon and Ava as they experience the volatile season of the 1960s–Vietnam, racism, social injustice, coming of age, and the sanctity (or not) of life. Miller skillfully uses a time-split setting and a mysterious Bible to intertwine their lives with Cassie, an author writing Gideon and Ava’s memoir fifty years later.

Life is precious

The author wasted no time in pulling me into the story. The characters are strong, yet vulnerable. I felt their pain as life presented seemingly insurmountable challenges. Their faith leads them to make decisions based on their love and trust for God and one another.

Do not be afraid for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. (Isaiah 13:5,7)
