Stand out

We’re in the midst of a lovely fall season–azure blue skies, comfortable temperatures, and nature’s awesome display of fall colors. When the forest cloaks itself in such amazing beauty, it’s easy to overlook simple pleasures which, when we stop to look, vividly stand out from the ordinary.

On a recent afternoon on my favorite nature trail, a carpet of fallen leaves covered the ground. Many were brown, but others were amazing in their uniqueness. On my wellness trek, I constantly paused to admire the beauty of individual leaves.

Standing out from the crowd

As believers, we stand out from the crowd. As followers of Jesus, we find ourselves under a microscope, constantly watched as people judge whether our actions reflect our claim to be Christian. At times we may falter on our path . . .

  • Do we gossip?
  • Are we quick to criticize?
  • Does our temper erupt, leaving us to regret hurtful words said to others?
  • Have we made a promise we didn’t keep?
  • Do we fail to acknowledge the kindness of others?
  • Does jealousy rear its ugly head in our relationships?
  • Are we missing our calling to live by the Fruit of the Spirit?

But the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Set apart

When something is sanctified, the person or object is set apart, for the use of its designer. In the Christian context, objects or people are sanctified or holy when they are set apart for God’s purposes. Christ is both the Sanctifier and the model of sanctification. Through God’s plan of sanctifying grace, He sent Jesus to be the means of our sanctification. We are made Holy through the blood and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. (Pasour, 2022, p. 120)

We’re not perfect–and sometimes we fall short. But we are blessed to have a guide, a mentor who is with us on our journey toward holiness. Through Jesus, we are set apart for His purpose. We are different, we stand out as one of His followers. Through Him, we are strong as a Child of God. Because of His power, we are courageous.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. (Ephesians 6:10)

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)

Our steps

As I traversed the walking trail, embracing God’s gift of seasonal beauty, I was reminded that others watch my journey. The students I taught over the years, my children and grandchildren, my church family, and the public with whom I interact daily observe my pathway and my actions.

Do I stand out?

I pray that my steps never leave them astray. I ask our Father to guide me on His pathway, that I may share the Good News of Jesus with others.

My prayers are also for you, dear friends. That our steps and our actions reflect the grace, mercy, and love of Jesus. May His Light shine through us as we share His gift of love with others.

I love the colors of fall. This week I’ve been in the mountains for a writing retreat. The trees were mostly bare, settling in for their winter rest. But when I returned, I found much beauty still surrounding my home–a few more days to enjoy the awesome beauty of the season. Wishing you joy and blessings, Terri.

You are right, Annie, it is often uncomfortable to stand out and voice our love and faith for God when the angry voices of the crowd are against us. Thank you for standing out through your ministry of service to God and His children. Wishing you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.
