The gift of words
Are you a reader? Since I learned to read (many years ago), I’ve loved the written word. Reading became my favorite pastime, and an escape when I needed one. The gift of words blesses me on a daily basis.
According to Google, written language originated around 3400 to 3100 BC in Mesopotamia and Egypt. We’ve come a long way since then. We find the gift of words in books, multiple other printed sources, technology devices, and seemingly unlimited options online.
Do you have a favorite mode of reading?
The Word
And then we have another perspective . . .
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:1-5)
One of my religion professors, a brilliant scholar and gifted preacher of God’s Word, viewed this passage, from John the Apostle, as an exceptional example of God inspired writing. This Scripture, beautifully and poetically, shares with us the presence of Jesus with us since the beginning. Matthew Henry says Jesus is, “the Word speaking from God to us, and to God for us.”
We are blessed to have God’s Word within reach at any moment. The most widely read book written and published, the Bible guides readers with wisdom and instruction on their walk with Christ. Christian authors, while knowing they cannot provide the divine nature and holy wisdom of the Bible, recognize that they are called to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to others.
Called to share–the gift of words
Christian authors write devotionals, non-fiction, and fiction as they strive to follow God’s calling to serve Him through their words. Writers seek knowledge from experts and conferences, hone their developing skills for years, and face numerous rejections as they answer His call to write.
Is writing your calling? There are so many different ways to answer His call to write–letters, notes of encouragement, cards, uplifting messages–even books!
May God Bless you, my friends.

Words truly are so important, Katherine. Thanks for this post!
I agree, Tim. Thank you for your encouraging words! Wishing you a blessed week.
Our words can bring comfort to others. Our words can lead others closer to God. 🙂 Blessings!
Our words are powerful in so many ways. Thank you, Melissa, for the words you share in service to our Lord and for your encouraging words to other authors. I hope your week is filled with joy and blessings!
I’m so thankful for the gift of words and still prefer to read them in a traditional book.
I absolutely agree, Diana. I love the feel and smell of a “real” book in my hands.
There are numerous Scriptures about the importance of words, among them Proverbs 18:21, “Life and death are in the power of the tongue.” Our words define our lives. Thanks, Katherine, for this inspiring reminder to guard our tongues.
I think we often forget the power of our tongue. Words once said cannot be taken back. I agree, my friend, we need to “guard our tongues.” Thank you for sharing your insights, Barbara.
What a coincidence! My pastor started a sermon series on John’s book yesterday. I looking forward to delving deeper into John’s God-inspired words.
I know it will be an awesome and inspiring series as your pastor focuses on the Gospel of John. It’s a treasure filled with a powerful testimony of faith, love, and the overwhelming gift of our Savior. Blessings!
Thank you Katherine. I love the John 1 passage. I’m amazed at the thought that “The Word was God.” And He has given us the Word of God so we can know Him, and with that gift we are also gifted with words to tell others about Him. Loved it!
I agree, the phrasing of this passage is beautiful and amazing–Our God is so many things–including The Word. Thank you, Sylvia.
We so often take the gift of words for granted, Katherine. On the occasions when I’ve suffered from laryngitis, I became acutely aware of how valuable they are. And to think that the God of the universe would give us The Word — awesome!
A great example, Annie. As a teacher, I had several bouts of laryngitis. Using a student as an interpreter or writing directions on poster board wasn’t the most effective means of delivering instruction. Awesome is right–How Mighty is our God–in so many ways!
The passage in John may be my favorite of all. It brings such a depth of meaning to so many other scriptures that reference the Word. You are right, how blessed we are to have the access to the Bible that we do. And endless opportunities to share that Word through our writing.
Terri, loved your response. Thank you! I agree, this scripture is so powerful and one of my favorites as well. We are so blessed!
Katherine, we are blessed to have God’s word. And I’ve read DiAnn’s new book. It’s excellent!
I agree, Debbie, DiAnn penned another “can’t put it down” suspense. Thanks for stopping by. Wishing you a great weekend.
Amen Katherine. Words are such a gift when used wisely. I pray my words always inspire and help others.
I join you in that prayer, Yvonne, that my words will be shared in love and kindness and will help and inspire. Thank you for your ministry, my friend, your words gift us with wisdom, blessings, and inspiration regularly.
