Pouring water

2018 Wellness Challenge 1

The holiday season is behind us and the New Year is ahead!

I invite you to join me in focusing on some new habits to help you be healthier in 2018.

This week’s challenge? Drink more water!

Oh, boy! Are you saying–“I hear that all the time!”

Or, “Ugh! I don’t like water!”

Perhaps, “I get plenty of fluids–everything I drink has water in it, so I don’t need to add plain water.”

Let’s talk just a little about why we need plain, ordinary water.

  • The human body is more than 60% water.
  • Water makes up the basis of our blood.
  • Water is necessary to remove waste products.
  • Water regulates our body temperature.
  • Water cushions our spinal cord and joints.
  • Water assists in carrying nutrients to all cells in our body.

It’s vital that we stay hydrated. Water hydrates us best. Sodas, sweetened juices, other sweetened beverages and alcoholic drinks add calories, but very little nutrition. These beverages should be consumed sparingly (better yet–not at all!)

Diet sodas provide no nutrients and may increase your body’s cravings for sweetened or high calorie foods. Drinking diet sodas may also be associated with Type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Wellness Challenge for this week! Drink only water (no sodas or sweetened beverages).

If you are a coffee drinker, try it without cream or sugar!

Try this for two weeks to see if you feel better. You may lose a little weight and get rid of that post-holiday sluggishness. If you’re brave enough to accept this challenge, please let me know how you do!

Water is not only a beautiful part of nature–it’s essential for life and really good for us!

Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year!
