The gift of hospitality
Three days, this past week, I received gifts. Not the kind wrapped in paper and ribbons, but precious moments shared from the heart. And the most special one–the gift of hospitality.
I traveled to Bristol, Virginia and Greeneville, Tennessee to speak to women of faith. I experienced the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, visited historical sites in Greenville, and met the most wonderful ladies. Their kind hospitality humbled me. Welcomed and housed in two different homes, with an amazing host and hostesses, their care for me surpassed the best five-star hotel.
Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. (Romans 12:13)
The organization, to which these women’s groups belong, recognizes the importance of caring for others. Motels and meals are expensive, so these host families foot the bill for guest speakers. What a marvelous way to share Christian love!

History
One afternoon, I explored downtown Greeneville. As a history lover, I seldom pass up an opportunity to visit a museum or historical site. Andrew Johnson was our 17th president, thrust into the position after the death of Abraham Lincoln. Although born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Johnson lived most of his life in the vicinity of Greeneville. I enjoyed an informative tour of his residence and learned even more from a museum devoted to his political career.
In the South, Johnson faced ridicule and harassment for his stance in support of the Union. However he is remembered for his strong support of the United States Constitution. He attempted to pave the way for a smoother and less painful process of unification after Civil War, but northern voters ousted him after one term in office.
Remember the days of old; consider the generation long past. Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders and they will explain to you. (Deuteronomy 32:7)
Peace and joy
I enjoy adventures. Hiking a mountain trail or white water rafting were not part of my activities this trip, but I received peaceful blessings from a sunrise walk through my hostess’s neighborhood.
The women I met were all strangers, but I found joy in our interactions. We talked, prayed, laughed together, and shared our hopes and dreams. The light of Jesus showed through my newfound friends and gifted me with peace and joy.
You make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your hands. (Psalm 92:4)
A lesson for me
The gift of hospitality…
I confess–as an introvert, I’m not the best at showing hospitality, but the kindness I received from my hosts and the encouragement granted me by these women of faith both humbled and inspired me. I need to do better! I’m praying God will help me gain the spirit of generosity and love shared by those who cared for me in my travels.

What a grand adventure and timely encouragement. We should all hold hospitality in our hearts for one another, but I confess that sometimes I want to be hospitable from a distance because it’s easier, and not as invasive. I’m trying to start small — generosity with time, once or twice a month — as the Lord grows me in this area.
