Cast your burden

Cast your burden upon the LORD and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be shaken. (Psalm 55:22)

Sometimes our burdens become overwhelming. It’s not always “bad” stuff. One of my responsibilities in retirement is caring for my grandchildren on school holidays and some after school pickup duty. This task isn’t a burden–it’s a joy!

Another recent blessing is a wellness Bible study I’m leading at a church in my community. I eagerly anticipate my time with this amazing group of men and women. They love and encourage each other and me! I’m so blessed by the time we spend together each week.

Other responsibilities include a part time job, singing in a community choir, and caring for a family member in declining health. And I want to be a good wife, mother, grandmother, complete church responsibilities, keep my writing ministry active, and support and encourage my fellow Christian authors.

My plate is full.

Mostly, I’m good at organizing and multi-tasking, but but two weeks ago a virus visited unexpectedly and stayed to “chop me off at the knees.” Not really–I didn’t lose any limbs, but the nasty bug packed a powerful punch, sapped my energy, delivered a prolonged cough, and created enough mucous to sail a ship.

My burden became heavy

Now I’m in recovery mode. How can I catch up?

Perhaps a better question is . . . Do I need to catch up?

“Come to me, all you are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29)

I know I need rest–time to recuperate and renew. But with all those tasks looming–how?

What did Jesus Do?

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. (Mark 1:35)

My answer, of course, as to “what to do,” is in His Word:

  • Escape to a quiet place
  • Pray
  • Focus on what is important

My most important task is to do what our Lord calls me to do in His name. Love Him, praise Him, care for His people (which includes my family, my church, and my community). In times of overwhelming burdens, my writing ministry may be pushed to the “back burner” and allowed to simmer as I complete other responsibilities.

One resource that I turned to in my recovery phase is Kim Teague’s recently published devotional, You Are Not Alone: 40 Devotions Embracing God’s Nearness. Each day these devotions reminded me of our Father’s love, concern, and faithfulness. Please review the information at the end of this message to learn more about this book and have an opportunity to win a copy.

Please know, my readers, supporters, and fellow authors, I continue to pray for you. May you cast your burdens and find rest with Him, who loves you with the greatest love of all.

May God bless you, dear ones.

You Are Not Alone: 40 Devotions Embracing God’s Nearness

From the book blurb: “Take time to rest in God’s presence. Let Him remind you He is your strength, refuge and comforter. That He hears you. Gives second chances. Fights for you. Bears your burdens. As you read each devotion, you’ll find a true story, Scriptures, and life applications. Each devotion closes with ways to remember, refresh, renew, and respond to the truth of God’s Word.”
