Forgotten casserole–remembering the things that matter

Do you sometimes forget things?

Maybe you missed a dental appointment or forgot a much needed item at the grocery store.

Have you ever forgotten a birthday or anniversary of a loved one? Perhaps you suffered some consequences from that lapse!

Life is busy!

It’s easy to forget where we put our car keys. Sometimes we fail to remember to pass on a message. Ever walk into a room and forget what you went there for?

Two weeks ago we had a special event at church. Our worship service included a baptism of the youngest addition to our congregation. I organized a meal after church for family, visitors, and our church members.

It’s always a hectic last minute rush to warm up the hot food, remove all the cold food from refrigerators, place food on the serving tables, make sure ice and beverages are being served, and herd everyone through the line. WHEW!

But, all went well. There was plenty of food. Everyone seemed to enjoy the celebration. Folks stayed around and helped wash dishes and clean up (that’s always a relief!)

So what is my point with all this?

This past week I cooked another meal at church. I opened the microwave to heat a dish and…

The forgotten casserole

I found a casserole in the microwave.

Ten days after our meal. UGH!

Needless to say, the squash and zucchini casserole I made with lots of cheese and buttered crackers on top–that’s normally very tasty–was now (after ten days) very disgusting.

What is your most embarrassing “forgetful” episode?

If just the thought of a ten-day old, unrefrigerated dish that contains mayonnaise isn’t enough to make you nauseous, just consider how badly it smelled when I dumped it.

Now lest you think I’m losing what little sense I have, I don’t think that is the case (please don’t ask my husband). However, forgetting a dish that I prepared for a special event and only accidentally discovering its existence ten days later is troubling for my state of mind.

But, as I think about it, I’ve decided to use this as a lesson. Forgetting the casserole makes me look rather silly. But, what about the things I forget to do that really matter?

  • Did I thank my husband for unstopping the bathtub drain last week?
  • Did I send a get-well card to a fellow church member that recently had surgery?
  • Did I tell my children I loved them the last time we spoke?
  • Did I hug my granddaughter after church?
  • Did I remember to thank my friend for bringing me strawberries yesterday?
Did I remember to pray? Did I thank God for my many blessings?

I expect most of us realize we’re not perfect. Part of that lack of perfection is occasionally forgetting things. But, we should always remember…

God loves us, He never forgets us, and He is always with us.

Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits–who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, Psalm 103:2-4

And, we can pray that He will help us remember those important things. Or remind us to make a list!

  1. I thank God each day my long-term memory is still intact, but I ask His help with the short-term every day; when I can remember. Somehow it’s difficult to envision you ever missing anything “major”, but we all let our busyness get the best of us and the smaller things often fall by the wayside from time to time. The fact that you remembered to count all those little things as blessings and thanked God for them, tells me you’re in tip-top shape my friend. God’s blessings Ms. Katherine.

J.D., thank you for your positive outlook on my memory “issues”. Forgetfulness will happen to all of us sooner of later (if we live long enough), but like you, I’m thankful that most of the time, my memory functions well. I know that you remember and are thankful for your blessings, too. Wishing you a happy and healthy day, my friend.

Katherine, I agree with J. D. on all points!
