Morning! A new beginning…

Are you a morning person?

Happy and cheerful first thing in the morning?

My husband is up before sunrise to welcome each new day.

 

My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul. Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise you , Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Psalm 108:1-4

My husband is joyful in the morning. Like the Psalmist, he  welcomes the new day with praise to our God.

Me? Not so much.

I should be joyful in the morning…I know I’m blessed.

The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. Proverbs 4:18

 

 

Each day is a gift.

As we wake up, before we get up, before we have a chance to grumble, complain or argue, we have the blessing of a new day. It’s sort of like the blessing of a New Year, except we’re given a new day EVERY morning, 365 days a year! And, although we cannot control everything that happens to us during this new day, we can, for the most part, control our reactions.

We know we’re going to face trials. Doesn’t something typically happen every day that brings us temptation, frustration, aggravation or worse?

But, we can choose how we react to those daily stresses. And, our God will be with us–every moment!

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

My husband is definitely a morning person. He’s disgustingly cheerful every morning, I confess that I am not.

Sometimes I’m grumpy.

 

But, I’m trying to do better. I’m learning to appreciate mornings. Especially when I can have my hot chocolate! But, now that I’m semi-retired, my husband and I can sometimes have morning time together (which we could not in the past due to my work schedule). So, for our morning time to be a blessing, I must leave my grumpiness behind. I’ve prayed…

Hear my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly. Psalm 5:2-3

I’m so thankful that God has helped me. Retirement has been a BIG adjustment for both of us. God heard my plea and granted me more patience and understanding. He’s helped me be a morning person (well, not completely yet, but I am making progress).

Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. Psalm 90:14

  1. I am definitely not a morning person. I like to stay up late. And, like you, my husband is a morning person. Go figure, huh? Opposites, and all of that. But it works. Thanks for the encouragement. Blessings on your day. 🙂

  2. NOT a morning person….but I love to stay up really late. My husband is the opposite. I’ve been known to be climbing in the bed about 3:30 (that’s rare – I must’ve had a big writing project I was working on), and his alarm is just going off for him to get ready for his hour commute to his wildlife biologist job of checking on woodpeckers before they awake for the day. We just laugh and continue on our opposing paths! (I attended a youth conference as a kid where the speaker encouraged us high-schoolers to wake up each day with, “Good morning, Lord,” instead of Good Lord – morning!”)

      Oh, Julie! I love this! I would have remembered that encouragement, too. “Good morning, Lord!” What a great way to start the day. I’ve been known to have an all-nighter at the computer as well.   3. Maybe it’s a writer’s thing. I’m with Julie… there are many mornings I’m coming to bed at 3 am as my husband is getting up for work. At least we get to chat a little before he leaves! Before I had kids (and figured out the only quiet time I could find was when everyone else was in bed) I was a morning person, however. I do miss the sound of the birds greeting the rising summer sun!

      Me, too, Michelle! When I’m up early I love to hear the birds, see the sunrise and enjoy the gift of the new day. But, like you, the evening might be my only quiet time for writing. Thankfully, we can appreciate both! Wishing you continued blessings.

  4. Wow, I am not the only writer who stays up till 3am! I am definitely not a morning person, but I think it’s beautiful. Your photography is lovely, Katherine. The morning is so peaceful to me. But I’m a night owl for sure.
