A step toward better health

It is possible for us, each one, to take a step toward better health. We have God on our side!

And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. (Romans 5:5)

God loves us!

Our Father wants us to have a good life in service to Him–a healthy and happy life.

But sometimes we’re not as healthy as God meant for us to be.

Some troubling statistics:

  • Chronic disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the United States.
  • Heart disease and cancer account for 48 percent of all deaths.
  • Obesity is a serious concern in the United States and contributes significantly to the development of chronic diseases such a heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.)

Although heredity can have some impact on whether we develop a chronic disease, the major culprit is our lifestyle choices. Chronic diseases can be caused by health-risk behaviors such as:

  • Poor nutrition
  • Lack of regular physical activity
  • Tobacco and alcohol use

Future posts on Wellness Wednesday will address actions we can take to reduce our risk of developing a chronic disease or changes we can make to help manage a chronic disease.

But for today, I have one suggestion for you–one step toward a healthier lifestyle.

Take a step toward better health

I encourage you to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared in a healthy way (fresh if possible, not fried, and avoiding added fat or sugar). The ultimate goal is five or more servings of fruits and veggies each day, but for now, just try for more than your typical day.

I’ll be praying for you to try this first step toward a healthier lifestyle.

Wishing you a blessed week.

We all have to start somewhere. Even a small step forward is one in the right direction. Good word Ms. Katherine.

One step at a time, my friend. Praying for the Cross-Dubya family. Thanks for your encouragement.

  2. I have some delicious red apples sitting in a bowl on the kitchen counter. Also, some red grapes in the refrigerator. I’ll start with the apple this morning. 🙂 Have a blessed day!

Yay! Apples and grapes! I had both of those yummy fruits today, too. Wishing you joy and blessings on your journey, Melissa.

  3. I purchased your book. I’ve made the choice to move to the plant based diet. God used you to part of a one-two punch to get my attention. I have chronic health issues with the digestive system. My gastro suggested I consider a healthier diet. Of course I told him “I’ll think about it.” Well, I really did and even sought God’s guidance. The I saw your book was being released. I remembered you working on it and that it was “forthcoming” and all. However, God used the doctor for punch one and then your book for punch two. I surrender. I’m trying it. In just over a week I’m already feeling better and have dropped a couple of pounds. I recommend the book. Genesis 1:27-30 got my attention in the week two day three study on God giving us the message that food from plants is good. I am now officially a “fan boy” of plant based food and you — lol.

Jimmie–what a way to brighten my day. I’ve been praying that Honoring God with My Body will be a guide and encouragement for those seeking a healthier lifestyle. I’m so thankful that God and your doctor got you started on the journey and I could have a part as well. I’ve been eating a mostly plant based diet for over 20 years. I’ll occasionally have some meat, but not often. It’s been a good and healthy choice for me. I’m glad it’s working for you, too. I’ll be praying for you.

  6. I love fruit! Veggies–not so much, but I’ll try. I do want to take good care of my temple and bring honor to the Lord.

Fruits are great for you–so glad you like them. Perhaps if you experimented with more veggies, you might find some that you like.
