Berry time!

Spring has arrived and it’s almost berry time! We now find berries in the grocery store, but very soon (if this last spell of cold weather didn’t freeze the blooms), we’ll have fresh berries.

Yummy–it’s almost berry time!

In the South, we’ll soon have strawberries and blueberries.

Blackberries offer their lush dark fruit in June.

I look forward to blueberries!

And…as a bonus to the great taste of nature’s gift of berries–they are GOOD for us!

Berries are packed with beneficial nutrients:

These nutrient rich gifts of nature have antioxidants and flavonoids which protect our cells from damage, help reduce inflammation, and work to prevent diseases (heart disease, cancer, and diabetes).

Berries are good for our brains! Some research demonstrates that berries boost a process called Neurogenesis (making new neurons). This can help clear out toxins in our brain, improve memory, and may contribute to the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease

Berries are a good source of Resveratrol (also found in grapes, red wine, and dark chocolate). Research suggests this component can reduce inflammation and prevent clogged arteries.

As part of a healthy diet, berries are full of healthy nutrients, help in weight management, and provide taste and beauty for our palate and plate.

I hope you enjoy nature’s gift of brightly colored berries this spring and summer.

Wishing you Joy in the Journey and happy, healthy eating!

Me, too! Those fresh ones are so good! And even better if we can pick them. I hope you have an opportunity to pick some berries this spring.

Ms. Diane and I both enjoy fresh berries. Trade you some jumbo cantaloupe later this year for wild blackberries? 🙂

    1. Katherine Pasour says:

That sounds like a plan. I love cantaloupe. Now to figure how to make the exchange halfway across the country.

      1. I like blueberries too but blackberries and strawberries are my favorites. I am attempting to grow both this year so I hope to have a harvest. We’ll see what happens!

I hope you have a wonderful harvest, Barbara. There’s nothing better than fresh, ripe fruit right off the vine. I love blackberry cobbler, although I recognize that’s not a healthy way to eat fruit. Blessings!

  2. I’m looking forward to fresh strawberries and blueberries from a produce market in a neighboring town! The sweetest berries I think I’ve ever eaten! But I can’t grow either. My dog would have them all gone before I could pick them. She loves berries!

I love berries, too, LuAnn. Too bad you dog would clean up your crop before you got any ripe ones. We once had a dog who loved fresh corn (from our garden). I hope the berry season is a good one where you are. Happy Spring!
